I think man is lucky to evolve to have cognitive abilities...hence, ability to determine the difference between right and wrong... to know what is good and bad for himself and his surroundings... to preserve life and himself.
I think man is only good because of a reason and this reason is based on how developed his thinking is.
I can't say man is fundamentally good but I can say man, just like any other animal, is intrinsically capable and would choose to preserve himself first (eg, survival of the fittest).
But there are better men and worse men... better men make better decisions that create more good for better reasons... other men do good but for the wrong reasons.
So a man who can do the right kind of good deed will only do so if he is able to think of the right reasons for it.
And of course, there are men, who aren't good and make bad decisions due to wrong reasons.
